Get to Know Ashley

Ashley Atwell currently serves as the START Family Mentor Program Coordinator and Senior Family Mentor, a role she stepped into in November 2025. She has been a dedicated member of the START program since February 2022, where she has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting families involved in the child welfare system. Her current position is the first of its kind across the state, reflecting both the growth of the program and the trust placed in her leadership and experience.

In her role as Program Coordinator and Senior Family Mentor, Mrs. Atwell balances multiple responsibilities. She maintains an active caseload, working directly with families to provide guidance, encouragement, and advocacy. In addition, she plays a key role in training, mentoring, and supporting family mentors throughout the state. She is passionate about building strong relationships among her peers and fostering a supportive, collaborative environment that enhances the overall effectiveness of the program.

Mrs. Atwell is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at the University of Kentucky, further strengthening her knowledge and skills to better serve the families she works with. She also holds a National Peer Support Certification, which reflects her formal training in providing peer-based support grounded in empathy, respect, and shared experience.

What truly sets Mrs. Atwell apart is her ability to draw from her own lived experience. She uses her personal journey to connect with families in a meaningful and authentic way, helping them navigate the often complex and overwhelming child welfare system. Her approach is rooted in compassion, understanding, and a belief that recovery and positive change are possible for every family.

Through her work, Mrs. Atwell strives to empower families, uplift her peers, and contribute to a system that is more responsive and supportive to those it serves. She remains committed to continued growth, both personally and professionally, as she works to make a lasting impact in the lives of the families and communities she supports.
