LEXINGTON, Ky. – For Lizbeth Garcia, a passion for helping people has shaped her both personally and professionally, finding social work to be a guiding principle in her life. A University of Kentucky Master of Social Work (MSW) student, Garcia looks to her future that will include another degree in December 2026.

After taking three years off from school following her high school graduation, Garcia found social work and hasn’t stopped since, earning an associate and bachelor’s degree, now pursuing her master’s.

Working full time at Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS), Garcia is balancing her schoolwork, as well as the financial aspect of earning a Master’s Degree. The Wrenn Margaret Elam & Evelyn J. Black Scholarship in Children’s Mental Health she earned in 2025 has eased financial pressures, allowing Garcia to devote her time and energy to her studies and her work with FCPS.

“When I received the email letting me know I got the scholarship, I realized my hard work is paying off and it was such a relief,” Garcia shared. “Now that some of the financial burden is gone, I am able to focus on my academics and not worry as much about that.”

Following her graduation from the MSW program, Garcia’s goal is to become a school social worker at an elementary school in Lexington. She hopes to fill the gap as a Spanish-speaking therapist for students.

Reflecting on her career so far and her time at the College of Social Work, Garcia credits CoSW donors for making a difference in her life through the scholarship so that she can continue to make a difference in the lives of the children that she works with at FCPS.

“For me, one of the things that was stopping me from going back to school was the financial aspect and that’s a shame. So having that help is awesome and I’m so grateful. Thanks to the donors, I’m able to achieve my goal,” Garcia said.

As she continues her academic journey, Garcia is motivated not only by her own success but by the impact she hopes to make in the future. She credits her coursework and scholarship support with helping her stay focused, confident, and prepared for the work ahead.

“Being able to focus more on my academics has made such a difference,” Garcia said. “I feel more relaxed and less stressed, and I know I’m on the right path.”

Looking ahead, Garcia hopes to one day give back in the same way she has been supported. Inspired by the generosity of scholarship donors, she envisions becoming a donor herself, helping future students pursue higher education and meaningful careers in social work. As she works toward completing her MSW, Garcia remains committed to using her education to serve her community and create lasting, positive change for the children and families she supports.
